We are a small scale, family organization that focuses on using superior, proven genetic lines to produce high quality show pigs. We started with our first litter in 2008, and through a lot of learning experiences and elbow grease, we are beginning to see great rewards from our efforts.
So here’s a little about each of us:
Diane Elrod (a.k.a. Mom)
Retired Army Nurse and boss of the whole operation. Mom is mostly involved in researching the genetic lines we use and making sure all the baby pigs get their shots. She also is good at whacking the rest of us in the back of the head when we don’t put the tools away.
Lee Elrod (a.k.a. Dad)
Grumpy old man who tries to run us over with the tractor. Dad’s previous experiences as a plumber and electrician come in handy when he adds yet another extension to the barn. Oh and he can weld too….sorta. Dad’s main job involves driving all over the place to find parts when Nathan calls him after something breaks. He also excels at spending hours on craigslist looking for used farm equipment.
Caleb Elrod (a.k.a. Oops)
Youngest son who recently graduated from Tarleton State University. Caleb has a lot of experience with raising show pigs from his high school days and from his experiences in the ag program at Tarleton. You can always tell when Caleb is thinking about pigs because he gets very serious and it makes his face look funny. Caleb is also joining the US Army this coming fall as an enlisted soldier in the transportation corps.
Alicia Elrod (Extra Sister)
Alicia is Caleb’s wife and one of the better cooks out of the whole group. Caleb’s cow, Gwen, is jealous of the attention that Caleb gives Alicia, so she chases Alicia when none of the rest of us are looking. Alicia makes money as a professional photographer while she finishes up school at Tarleton, so if you are looking for a good photographer for an event give her a shout at aliciaelrodphotography@gmail.com. Alicia and Caleb are currently expecting twin girls this September. Their names are Emma Rea and Autumn Elizabeth.
Nathan Elrod (sailor/farmer)
Oldest son who went to sea for ten years to work as an engineer aboard decrepit old ships. Having become dissatisfied with life at sea, Nathan returned to college to pursue a degree in Animal Science from Tarleton. Nathan has the least experience working with animals, but he is much better at welding than anyone else so they let him live at the farm while going to school.
The Torviks (Extra Family)
The Torviks consist of Rachel, Hilmar IV, Hilmar V, and new baby Haven. Rachel is Lee and Diane’s only daughter and is married to Hilmar IV. Rachel teaches Algebra and coaches Varsity Volleyball at Judson High School. Hilmar IV is a stay at home dad, trying to finish his college degree in business, while making sure the baby doesn’t fall off the couch again. Hilmar V is the first grandchild for Lee and Diane and they are disappointed in him because he has funny looking ears. Haven does not have funny looking ears, but he can’t seem to keep a straight face when a camera is present. The Torviks don’t get up to the farm very often, but when they do, we make extensive use of Hilmar V’s superior porcine evaluation skills to select the finest pigs in the litter.
